Gambler 40 converted to electric

John Robinson aka 'Poly John' acquired his 'handle' because of his enthusiasm for electric flight and  Li-poly battery power. The Ripmax Gambler 40 shown was originally an IC model which he converted to electric.  Powered by a Hacker B5012L Brushless Motor through a  master 77 amp Octo Brushless speed controller. Batteries are Thunder Power 4S5P, 8 amp supplied by West London Models. It 'flies on rails' and is probably equal to a 60 size IC aerobatic model.

That was in 2006 but how things have changed ! Not only in battery and motor technology but  Johns flying and the models he now flys. The Gambler has long been retired to the back of the hanger being replaced by a Kyosho oxalys (left) with a kontroniks outrunner brushless motor pulling 1.2kw out of the  5cell 5.3Ah lipos controlled by a  hacker 80amp 25 volts ESC swinging a 16 x 13 prop.  But Johns pride and joy is his Diesel f3a pattern ship (right). Powered by a hacker  C50 13XL motor and a 7 to 1 gear box turning a 22 x 13 prop apc, 10cell thunder power 6.6Ah lipos all controlled by a Hacker acro 90 series ESC pulling 3400 watts

Kevan Gillings (our Vice Chairman) with his Flair Puppeter which he built from a plan not the kit !Powered by a brushless 900 watt motor swinging a 12.5 x 6 prop pulling 800 watts of power from the six cell 4350 mAh Li-po battery pack. Kev has been modeling for 53 years flying both control line and RC but has recently become an electric fanatic.

Pictured right is Kev with his Great Planes Extra that he converted from IC to electric. Fitted with a 600 Watt outrunner motor ,4 cell 4350 mAh lipo's and a 60 amp ESC. Swings a 14 x 7 prop and fly's as good as it looks !

Stef Reynolds (yours truly). I converted to electric around six months ago and have not looked back since. The photo to the left is my Sebart Kantana 30E powered by a Hacker A30 14L swinging a 14 x 7 prop using a Castlecreations Phoenix 80 ESC and a three cell Kokam 2400 mAh 30C Li-po battery pack. To the right is a photo of my new Sebart Sukhoi 29S, again power is taken from a Kokam three cell 2400mAh 30C Li-po battery pack and a Castlecreations Phoenix 80 ESC. The motor is the slightly larger A30 10XL swinging a 15 x 8 prop.

Phil Brooks with his new unflown Sebart Sukhoi 30S.                                          This is Phil's first electric plane and hopefully it will get its maiden flight on Sunday 13th April. Phil has been with the club for many years now flying sport IC models and is the main person to see at the field if you are new to model flying and need someone to take you up on a buddy lead.

Brian Cole (safety officer at the wymeswold field and head groundsman) with his Kyosho oxalys. Powered by a Vortex 50/55/730 outrunner brushless motor,8000mAh 5 cell lipos and a Castlecreations Phoenix 80 ESC swinging a 15 x 8 prop. Brian has been with the LMFC for around 6 years but started flying electric on and off a year ago.

Steve McWeeney with his ParkZone spitfire.                                                    These small electric ready-to-fly war birds look really realistic in the air and although small are not twitchy or hard to fly. When steves flying his theres always a few on-looking jealous eyes !
