A FEW WORDS FROM OUR CHAIRMAN

I extend a warm welcome to everyone who visits this site, whether you are doing so to find out more about our Club, or to learn a little more about the sport of miniature aircraft building and flying, or as a member of LMFC and you wish to learn about latest news, events, contact names, etc., within your Club.

If you fit the first two categories please refer to the heading ‘Loughborough Model Flying Club' or 'About the Sport’ I hope you find it interesting and informative. Then browse the rest of the site for further information or interest.

To fellow LMFC members, thank you for your continued support by being a member of the Club. As members, you belong to a club that has a reputation for being friendly and welcoming to anyone who takes part in, or wishes to learn more about LMFC and our sport.

Loughborough Model Flying Club

  • The Club has existed in various forms and flown model aircraft from the present general location since the late 1940’s. It became Loughborough Model Flying Club in March 1980 and is the only club of its type in the Borough of Charnwood.

  • Membership is available to anyone - there isn’t any age or physical limitation to becoming a member. The Sport of model aircraft building and flying is non-seasonal, unlike some other sports, so you can maximise the return on your investment by participating throughout the whole year.
  • The majority of formal business in running the Club is conducted openly such that all members are able to voice their opinions. Whilst it is not unknown for some topics to generate very lively comment and strong opinions, I regard these open Meetings as the most beneficial way in which to ensure the Club fairly represents the views of membership. This not only applies to the December, Annual General Meeting, but also the meetings held on the first Monday of each month. So why not come along to one of the meetings and let us know your views, as well as taking the opportunity to talk to other members about the more interesting aspects of being a member of LMFC i.e. building and flying miniature aircraft.

  • We are also known for our respected annual Helicopter Fly-in (normally held in September) and Swap Meet (usually held in December) and this is again a reflection of the manner in which members approach our sport and Club activities.
  • Presently we fly at Derby Road Playing Fields, off the A6 road between Loughborough and Hathern. The site is owned by Charnwood Borough Council with whom we have an annual rental agreement for use of this facility. The whole site covers an area of approximately 50 acres and is available for our use seven days a week, from 10am until dusk, 356 days a year.

  • The LMFC membership fee covers one year running beginning January to end December, although reductions are generally available for members joining late in the year. A Membership Application Form can be found elsewhere on this site. Please contact the Membership Secretary for advice on the current fee.

  • As a member of LMFC you are required to have Third Party Public and Products Liability insurance which can be readily obtained through the Club (refer to Safety and Legal Controls).
  • Annual membership numbers of LMFC range between 75 and 90 pilots.
One final point to all those who already enjoy taking part in our sport:
By continuing to conduct your activity with safety as the first priority, and with consideration and respect for others around you, you will reap maximum enjoyment and benefit from it.

Best wishes,

About the Sport

  • Miniature aircraft building and flying which is recognised by UK Sport as an official sport.
  • Radio Control signals are transmitted within the 35MHz band specifically identified by the Radio Communications Agency (RCA) for the use of model aircraft only.
  • Your choice is endless providing you have the requisite skills in assembling and flying. As a member of LMFC it is our desire and intent that you should become proficient in both activities.

Aircraft Control

The most popular forms are:

Control Line – where fine, high strength, wires are attached to the aircraft control surface at one end, and at the other end to a control handle which the pilot holds. Movement of the control handle up or down causes a like response in the aircraft control surface to produce loops, bunts, wing-over or inverted flight and many others.

Radio Control – where the aircraft is controlled by radio signals output by the pilots transmitter and interpreted by the receiver mounted within the aircraft. The aircraft control surfaces move in response to the movement of the joysticks and switches operated on the transmitter by the pilot.

Aircraft Types

Cover the whole range of aircraft from simple small flying wings to large scale replicas of the full size version; from fixed wing to rotary (helicopters); from high wing slow flying limited aerobatic to low wing fast fully aerobatic models; from those made of polystyrene to those fabricated from wood; from those assembled from ‘Almost Ready To Fly’ kits to those fully fabricated from raw materials and a reference drawing.

Aircraft Motive Power

Electric Motor or Combustion Engine, with multiple numbers for the more adventurous flyer, is most widely used.

Alternatively, a miniature Gas Turbine Engine, if your pocket is deep enough.
